Meetings and Presentations

Jim Shedlock

Several staff attended and actively participated in the 2008 Medical Library Association conference that was held here in Chicago on May 16th - 21st at the Hyatt Regency. Jim Shedlock, Director, served as co-chair of the Local Assistance Committee which provides hospitality and facilities assistance services to visiting members, speakers and exhibitors and presented welcome remarks to the attendees.

Jim also served as an invited speaker for the Nursing and Allied Health Resources Section and Hospital Libraries Section program on Connecting Libraries to Organizational Mission: Using Assessment to Strengthen the Library's Institutional Role.  Jim's paper was titled The Academic Library's Perspective on Assessment and Institutional Role.

He also moderated a session sponsored by the National Program Committee on Forging Connections to Emerging Research: New Horizons. Jim also co-presented a poster with Ruth Holst, Associate Director National Network of Libraries of Medicine (NN/LM) Greater Midwest Region, University of Illinois, Chicago, titled Reconnecting the Past: Moving the National Library of Medicine to Chicago.

Michelle FrisqueMichelle Frisque, Head, Information Systems presented a poster on Tags: How do Users Describe their Information?

Jeff Miller, Vice Dean for Operations, Feinberg School of Medicine, spoke on a panel convened by the Leadership and Management Section on the topic of Connecting with Leaders: What Do They Expect?  Other panelists included deans from University of Wisconsin-Madison and Rush University and hospital administrators from Children's Memorial Hospital and Evanston Northwestern Healthcare. 


Heidi Nickisch DugganHeidi Nickisch Duggan, Associate Director, was an invited participant at EBSCO’s Medical Executive Seminar in April.  The seminar participants included EBSCO senior management and librarians from academic health sciences and hospital libraries throughout the United States.  The seminar provided the opportunity to discuss various approaches for addressing issues surrounding electronic journals and other e-resources with peers and industry executives.

Ramune KubiliusRamune Kubilius, Collection Development / Special Projects Librarian, attended a one day workshop, Introduction to Scholarly Communication Including the Nuts and Bolts of Institutional Repositories on April 9th at the University of Illinois at Chicago. The one day event was organized by the CARLI (Consortium of Academic and Research Libraries in Illinois) Collections Working Group.

Susan WishnetskySerials and Electronic Resources Management Librarian Susan Wishnetsky was in Atlanta, Georgia from March 18th - 21st to attend the third annual Electronic Resources & Libraries conference. Topics discussed included management, preservation, and evaluation of electronic resource collections.

Jim BruckerTony OlsonJim Brucker, Instructional Design Librarian, and Rachel Benoit were married on the beach at Kona Village Resort on the Big Island of Hawaii in February, with humpback whales breaching in the background.

Tony Olson, Catalog Librarian and his wife Dianne are grandparents again. Their second grandson, Jacob Thomas Olson, was born on April 14, 2008.

Anna FlemingAnna Fleming, Acquisitions Librarian, recently joined the American Academy of Pediatrics new Library Advisory Board.  Members of the group work in academic and hospital libraries and serve a two-year post.  The group met for the first time during the Medical Library Association conference in Chicago in May.
