Galter Health Sciences Library staff have been publishing, presenting, and more over the last several months. Here's a brief run down of what they've been up to.

APPOINTMENTS

MarkIn September, Mark Berendsen was appointed Research Librarian, a position that places him in charge of the library’s systematic review service. One of his additional roles is as Trials Search Coordinator for The Cochrane Heart Group Satellite United States (US), launched in September 2013 “to develop capacity, collaboration and training in systematic reviews and enhance the impact of the CHG and the Cochrane Collaboration”.

RoseIn September, Rose Hedberg joined the Galter Library staff and began her one year tenure as a Second-year National Library of Medicine (NLM) Associate Fellow.  During the first year of her fellowship at the NLM, Rose's projects included characterizing extramural informatics grants investments, assessing the need for a set of guidelines for NLM API documentation, and measuring the performance of individual lexical variants in concept mapping within the UMLS Metathesaurus. 

In October, Piotr Hebal, Systems Analyst/Programmer in NUCATS, joined Galter's Information Systems Department for a 6-month period. Piotr is an experienced Rails developer and will be working with Jeremy Prevost and Steve Hunt to refactor our website.

TEACHING

RonRonald Sims, Special Collections Librarian, continues to facilitate two history of medicine seminars as part of the Medical Humanities and Bioethics Program, an elective for M1 and M2 students, covering 5,000 years of medical history in five weeks. Focusing on the modern period (1501 to the present), students read from primary texts. Highlighted works included Andrew Boorde’s Breviary of healthe, for all maner of syckenesses and diseases the which may be in man or woman (1557); John Tanner’s Hidden treasures of the art of physic (1659); Peter Shaw’s New practice of physic (1738); and many others from the rare book collection. Ron and the Galter Library have been teaching this elective for ten years.

GeraldNight-time circulation desk supervisor, Gerald Battle married Yolanda Simmons on October 11, 2013. Congratulations, Gerald!

JimJim Brucker, Instructional Design Librarian has been enriching the work of the Center for Education in Medicine (CEM) with his instructional design expertise on a part-time basis for some time now. On 1 January 2014, Jim moved to CEM full-time. We wish him well in his new position!

Baby JeffPublic services librarian, Mary Anne Zmaczynski and her husband Nathan welcomed Jeffrey Bonn Raymond Gumley into the world on Friday, December 6, 2013, weighing 8 lbs, 6 oz and measuring 20 inches long. Congratulations, Mary Anne and Nathan!
