Featured GalterGuide: Graphic Medicine

PDF

The U.S. National Library of Medicine (NLM) began collecting graphic medicine in 2016, while Galter Library’s entry into collecting the genre in mid-2018 was announced in Galter’s own site and also was featured in the graphicmedicine.org site’s “This Week in Medicine: 5/18/18 ”.

NLM’s blog “Circulating Now ” in a December 2017 posting described the emerging area as "the use of comics or graphic narratives in health care discourse…Graphic medicine is read by the general public, but is also used in medical education and patient care to improve health professionals’ understanding of the patient experience and other factors to consider when developing treatment strategies.”

The GalterGuide for Graphic Medicine provides links to definitions, websites, social media, exhibits and educational tools in the field. Additionally, selected books (graphic novels, memoirs, nonfiction) are listed, including print and online titles available at Northwestern as well as open access titles. The collection of resources in the guide is intended as a starting point for those interested in graphic medicine and is by no means meant to be comprehensive since the field is ever growing and evolving.
