Frank Seward Johnson was born April 18, 1856 in Chicago. After attending private school, he entered Northwestern University in 1874, receiving his degree of A.B. in 1878. Three years later, he was awarded his master’s degree also from Northwestern, and in the same year he earned his medical degree from Chicago Medical College.

In 1883 he was appointed demonstrator of histology at Chicago Medical College, and a year later was named professor. Several years later, after recovering from repeated attacks of appendicitis which forced him to give up teaching for a time, he became professor of medicine and later made dean of the faculty. About this time, the college completed the union with the university and became the Northwestern University Medical School. In 1910 he was elected emeritus dean and professor of medicine.

Dr. Johnson also served as consulting physician to Michael Reese, Mercy, and the Women’s hospitals. He was a member of the American Medical Association, the Institute of Medicine, the Chicago Academy of Sciences, and the Chicago Literary and University Clubs.

NOTABLE FACT: Dr. Hosmer Allen Johnson (1824-1901), the father of Dr. Frank S. Johnson, was one of the founders of the Chicago Medical College and a teacher in the institution until his death.
