Two New Classes Focus on Ethics and the Research Process

You’re invited to participate in two new Galter classes about ethics in the research process. Join the sessions to delve into ethical questions you may already have and learn new ways to think about ethical authorship and the use of AI in research. Both classes are led by Mohammad Hosseini, MA, PhD, Assistant Professor, Preventive Medicine (Biostatistics and Informatics). Dr. Hosseini’s research is focused on ethical implications of using AI in research and publications, research ethics, and integrity and open science.

"Ethics of Authorship in Medical Research and Publications" explores the ethical and professional significance of authorship in scholarly research. Participants will learn about common authorship practices and disputes, apply established authorship criteria to determine who qualifies for authorship, and identify unethical practices such as guest, gift, and ghost authorship. The session also introduces emerging approaches to contributorship, including the CRediT taxonomy, and considers how changing patterns of collaboration are reshaping the attribution of scholarly work. Through discussion, participants will reflect on making fair authorship decisions, preventing conflicts, and resolving disputes in collaborative research environments.

"Ethics of Using AI in Medical Research and Publications" examines the ethical use of artificial intelligence across the research lifecycle, from study design and data analysis to manuscript preparation and research oversight. Participants will explore how core research ethics principles apply to AI-enabled research, evaluate the potential benefits and risks of AI tools in different research activities, and learn when disclosure of AI use is required, recommended, or unnecessary. Through discussion, participants will develop practical approaches for assessing and managing AI-related risks in their own research context.
