Staff Departures
After 27 years of service, James Shedlock, AMLS, AHIP, FMLA, Director of the Galter Health Sciences Library has retired. Under his leadership, the library was renovated and expanded, creating space and infrastructure to improve user access to then-developing online databases. You can read more about Jim’s career and service to the library profession on the Feinberg School of Medicine website. We wish Jim well in his retirement!
Michelle Frisque, Head of Information Systems left the Galter Library on January 4 to join the Chicago Public Library as the Director of Library Technology. Michelle's talents, history of successful initiatives at Galter, and leadership in the national library IT arena will make her as valued and respected at CPL as she was at Galter. Good luck, Michelle!
Presentations
On January 21, Ron Sims, Special Collections Librarian shared Civil War equipment and memorabilia from the Galter Library Special Collections in a discussion centered on the Northlight Theatre’s production of Matthew Lopez’s play, The Whipping Man, which earned the John Gassner Playwriting Award from the Outer Critics Circle.
Ron also presented on “Daniel Hale Williams, MD: His Legacy of African-American Interns at Provident Hospital…the Northwestern Experience” at a conference on Black Self-Determination through Health Care and Nursing: The Provident Hospital Training School. The conference, celebrating the legacy of Provident Hospital and Training School, was held on February 8, at the Chicago State University Library. It was sponsored by the Chicago State University Archives and Special Collections and Chicago State University Library.
This month in Library Notes, Ron recounts the lives of a number of Northwestern's African American graduates who went on to intern at Provident Hospital.
Jeremy Prevost, Web Applications/Software Developer, and Steve Hunt, Web Librarian attended the Code4Lib conference at University of Illinois at Chicago, February 11-14. Jeremy presented on De-Sucking the Library User Experience.
