Photograph of Ron SimsThe Chicago Area Medical Archivists (CAMA) held their sixth annual history symposium on October 26, 2007 at the Galter Library.  Ron Sims, Special Collections Librarian, collaborated with John Nanninga, MD, Associate Clinical Professor of Urology, Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, on a presentation titled “Chicago and the history of transplantation of the testicle.”  This paper has since been published in Chicago medicine, Fall 2007; 110 (15):26-32.  More information about CAMA can be found by visiting their website.

Photograph of Anna FlemingPhotograph of Ramune KubiliusAnna Fleming, Acquisitions Librarian, and Ramune Kubilius, Collection Development / Special Projects Librarian, attended the 27th Annual Charleston Conference: Issues in Book and Serial Acquisition on November 7-10, 2007, in Charleston, SC.  Anna initiated and moderated a very well-attended panel session entitled: “We’re All in This Together- Lessons Learned in Library-Vendor-Publisher Relations”. As an organizing committee member, Ramune helped with the planning of several panel sessions and helped coordinate session reporters for the newsletter, Against the Grain. She also provided an annual trends update for the 7th annual Health Sciences Lively Lunch.

Photograph of Stephanie KernsThe University of Illinois at Chicago hosted The Association of Research Libraries (ARL) and Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL) Institute for Scholarly Communication in Illinois sponsored by the Consortium of Academic and Research Libraries in Illinois (CARLI) on December 5-7, 2007.  Stephanie Kerns, Head, Education and Outreach / Curriculum Librarian, and James Shedlock, Director, attended this intensive two-and-a-half day workshop to learn new and innovative ways to apply outreach strategies for the library.

Photograph of Jim ShedlockAs part of the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC), Jim also attended the program and Board meeting of the Association of Academic Health Sciences Libraries (AAHSL) on November 1-7, 2007, which meets at the AAMC.  He serves as AAHSL’s Information Management Officer and updated the Board and membership on changes and improvements to the association’s website.  In addition, Jim attended the annual symposium of the American Medical Informatics Association (AMIA), in Chicago on November 10-14, 2007.  This annual symposium reflects AMIA’s growing role in biomedical and health informatics and technology research and development, in translation of science to real-world applications, and in national health policy and education.

Photograph of Michelle FrisqueMichelle Frisque, Head, Information Systems, attended the American Society for Information Science and Technology (ASIS&T) Annual Meeting in Milwaukee, WI, on October 20-24, 2007.  She also attended the American Library Association’s (ALA) Midwinter Meeting in Philadelphia, PA on January 11-15, 2008.  Michelle is currently serving on the Library and Information Association’s (LITA) Board of Directors as Director-at-large.

The Galter Health Sciences Library was a host site for the Medical Library Association’s Educational webcast about Scholarly Publishing and Open Access on Tuesday, November 20, 2007.  Librarians from around the Chicagoland area attended the event.

Welcome!

The Galter Health Sciences Library welcomes its newest staff member, Philister Sidigu, as our Education Assistant in the Education and Outreach department.  Philister first joined the Galter team in April of 2006 as a part-time staff member while completing her Bachelor of Arts degree in film and video from Columbia College.  She is currently pursuing a Master of Science degree from DePaul University, majoring in Digital Cinema.  Welcome Philister!
