Software on Library Computers


The following is a list of the software available for use on the library's public computers. The software is on all computers unless otherwise stated. Online streaming video and other educational resources can be found on the Student Resources GalterList.

 

Specialized Informatics Software on the Research Computer "Cluster"

Galter Library's Learning Resources Center (LRC) has a group of 6 computers (4 Windows PCs and 2 Macs, numbered RES 901-906) equipped with software packages dedicated to handling statistical and bioinformatics workflows. These packages include:

  • Partek Genomics Suite (one Windows PC only)

In addition, these computers have standard productivity software (Microsoft Office suite and the Adobe Creative Cloud).

Galter License to MetaCore

Galter Library has a license to the pathway analysis software GeneGo MetaCore. This software is entirely web-based with a graphical user interface and extensive user help guides and tutorials.

To use MetaCore, you must register at the Galter Library website's MetaCore registration page. Please read the MetaCore guide and Terms of Use carefully before registering. You must use your Northwestern, NMH, or Lurie Children's email address to register.

After registration, you can use MetaCore from any computer with an internet connection. You don't have to come to the library to use MetaCore.

 

Software Support

The library provides access to a number of statistical software packages (SAS, Stata, SPSS, R) and productivity software (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) on the public computers at Galter. However we do not provide educational or technical support for these products. Here are your options:

  • Online tutorials: check the individual software website for guides and video tutorials or search YouTube.
  • lynda.com: on demand access to a full range of online courses, currently being piloted by NU. Includes tutorials on all the major software packages. Learn more.
  • Biostatistical Collaboration Center: offers fee-based support and collaboration on statistical projects.
  • Take a class through NU Human Resources or get one-on-one support (faculty/staff only). These services are fee-based. Learn more.
 

Discounted or Free Software for NU Affiliates

Some of the software listed here is offered for academic and/or personal use at significant or total discount to Northwestern faculty and staff or students. An active NetID is required to download any software. See the NUIT Software site for details and instructions.
