William Henry Holmes PortraitWilliam Henry “Harry” Holmes was born in Belfast, Ireland in 1887. He came to Chicago in 1897 with his mother and stepfather. Dr. Holmes graduated with his medical degree from Northwestern University in 1910 with high grades. He thoroughly prepared for his chosen field, internal medicine, and underwent special training in clinical neurology and pathology. He served some time as Pathologist of Wesley Hospital, introducing new chemical and bacteriological laboratory methods.

Soon after his graduation, he was appointed to the faculty of Northwestern as instructor in Clinical Pathology. His steady advance in academic rank was interrupted only by his army service in France. As Assistant Surgeon of the Thirty-Second Division with the rank of Major, he served with distinction receiving numerous citations of merit, including the Croix de Guerre with Gold Star.

His contributions to medical literature are numerous, including clinical investigation in the fields of neurology, cardiology, and metabolic diseases. His textbook on bacillary and rickettsial infections, on which Dr. Holmes expended a great deal of study, was published shortly before his death.
